Obituary for Patrick O'Brien

PATRICK DERMOT JOSEPH O’BRIEN:
It is with much sadness that we advise of Patrick’s passing the 17th of August 2022. As with all things in Patrick’s life, his passing was on his own terms, and it was a peaceful one. Patrick was born in Dublin, Ireland to Katherine and William O’Brien. In the early 1950’s Patrick decided to immigrate to Canada. Shortly thereafter his parents and siblings (Collette and Brendan) followed. He initially made a home in Toronto, enjoying success and making friends at the Argonaut Rowing Club. After several years in Toronto, he traveled and worked in many provinces throughout Canada. After meeting his wife Joan they moved to Espanola, Ontario where they had their daughter Deirdre, but ultimately returned to the Toronto area. Patrick owned property in Hanover where he built a summer home on Marl Lake. While his brother Barry stayed in the Toronto area, his parents relocated to Santa Barbara, California and his sister moved to Vancouver. Patrick was an ironworker & millwright by trade, but it was his outside interests that he’ll be remembered for – his voracious appetite for reading and his love for Irish culture most prominent. He was recently described by friends as a “Renaissance man: he was a scholar, an inventor, an architect and builder, a mathematician, a mechanic, a botanist, a carpenter, a lover of books and information, and a thinker of grandiose proportions” - A true representation of him. His handwritten detailed letters with accompanying photocopied highlighted articles on any topic, are legendary amongst his friends and family. They will now be missed as much as the man himself.
He leaves behind his daughter Deirdre, his sister Collette, his most beloved grandsons Tyler and Andrew, great grandson Jackson and great granddaughter Charlee. Nieces: Fiona, Alanna, Sarah, Cheryl & Carmen; Nephews: Andrew, Scott, Burke and Kevin. Predeceased by wife Joan and brother Brendan.
Special thanks to Richard and Kerry for their assistance caring for Patrick in the last few years and also to the staff at MacKenzie Health LTC. He could always be heard saying how blessed he was at the amount of care and love shown to him.
