Obituary for Giovanni Andrighetti

GIOVANNI ANDRIGHETTI
God called our strong, beloved Nani home on May 7, 2022. Deeply devoted to his faith and his family, he lived life according to the two golden rules that were instilled in him by his father: be kind and be honest.

Devoted husband of Luciana. Loving father of Antonella, Cinzia (Frank), and Renza. Cherished nonno of Alessia and Andrew. Predeceased by his brothers Luigi (Corona) and Giuseppe (Maria) and survived by his brothers Angelo and Sergio (Secondina) and his sister, Sara. Fondly remembered by his extended Bellunese family.

Giovanni was born in Fonzaso, Italy on August 7, 1931, beneath the sanctuary of Monte Roncon where he proudly continued to maintain la casera that was built by his grandfather. At 16, he left home to study his trades. At 22, he entered the military. As an Alpino del Settimo, he learned the discipline and work-ethic that would define his entire life. After the military, he left Italy for Switzerland in search of work. On January 31, 1955, at the age of 24, Giovanni arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax on the Saturnia ship. He returned to Italy in 1961 where he met his future wife, Luciana. They married in 1962 in Toronto. He worked as a bulldozer operator in often dangerous and grueling conditions to support his family. In his retirement, Giovanni never grasped the concept of rest. He was always happiest when he was working: tending to his vegetable garden, fruit trees and flowers, chopping wood, fishing, making wine, and aging cheese.

He enjoyed simple things; a plate of polenta with Piave cheese was enough to satisfy him. He was strong but kind and always very generous and truly genuine. He will be held dear in the hearts of his family and friends.
Relatives and friends are welcome to join the Andrighetti family for visitation at Demarco Funeral Home - Keele Chapel (3725 Keele Street, Toronto, Ontario. Tel. 416-636-7027) on Friday, May 13th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Norbert’s Roman Catholic Church (100 Regent Road, North York, ON M3K 1H1) on Saturday, May 14th at 10:00 am. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery (8361 Yonge Street, Thornhill, ON, L3T 2C7).
