Obituary for Giovanna Scarsella
Surrounded by her most beloved family, Giovanna Scarsella passed away peacefully on September 26, 2022 at the age of 93. She was the strongest woman we will ever know. Our matriarch is sorrily missed by her beloved daughter Louisa, and her grandchildren, Joel, Lauren (Salim), Alexander (Stefania), and Peter. She is now reunited with her adoring husband, Raffaele, devoted son, Peter, and loving daughter-in-law, Mona. She will be missed by her sisters abroad and by many nieces, nephews and cousins near and far. And perhaps most importantly, Giovanna will be dearly missed by her church community.
Giovanna lived a life of devotion, with Christ at the center of all things. She was a Eucharistic minister for more than 30 years and was always there to support her community in big and small ways; from attending daily mass to providing beautiful meals to the nuns and priests of St Augustine of Canterbury parish. Giovanna took great pride in her work as a volunteer with the “vecchietti” at Hawthorne Retirement Residence. She felt a strong sense of purpose and duty that guided her life to the very end.
She loved to travel to Holy sites from the Santuario Della SS. Trintà to the Holy Land and Medugorje in Bosnia. Each time she returned from her pilgrimages, she was renewed in faith and restored in spirit.
While we are all sad at this great loss, Giovanna would ask that we take some time to mourn, but that we do not dwell on her passing. Rather, we should continue to rejoice in the river of life that surrounds us. Tutto passa.
