Obituary for Domenico Marzola

Domenico Marzola, who was the best Daddy in the world, our warrior, strong silent type, with a wealth of knowledge, and a passion for life, passed away peacefully on Tuesday May 23, 2023 at the age of 96. He will now be reunited with all his loved ones in Heaven.

He was born in Farindola, Pescara, Italy where the mountain air and views took your breath away, with farm to table organic veggies and meat. He went to work in the mines in France at 21 years of age and met his best friend Tommaso (Lozio), who then became his brother-in-law. Tommaso (our beloved late Uncle who was like a dad to us) was most likely greeting him along side our mother at the heavenly gates with an aperitif in hand. He met our beloved Mamma in France and 6 months later, married her. Came to Canada in 1956 with a few hundred dollars in his pocket (as he used to say) to start his life with my mom and build his beautiful family. He worked hard as a Construction Superintendent, and was a whiz with doing math equations quickly in his head and was able to convert anything. He loved his DIY home repairs and carpentry work as our Nonno did. He then spent many years working many different jobs at the Wellesley Hospital (Elevator Man, Window washer, janitor, etc.)

Absolutely the strongest man we have ever known, who overcame living with 2 cancers for almost 4 years, after the doctors gave him a year to live! Spent so many months in and out of hospitals over the past 4 years, and was always so polite and kind to the nurses, doctors and PSWs. They all loved him as a patient. They called him Senor or papa and always appreciated him saying “thank you.” His strength allowed him to hang on one more day so he was able to be here for his 96th birthday!

He was someone who was a master at growing his own amazing vegetable garden at 92 years young! One year he grew 113 zucchinis! He had a wonderful sense of humour and loved sharing his stories of “back in the day” that were filled with plenty of adventures. We all loved his sayings; “I don’t drink water because it’s too wet” or I only have 2 speeds; “slow and stop.”

He will be deeply missed by all. His loving children who he cherished and adored and always treated with respect; Lorenzo, Frida and Patricia, and his late wife Michelina. Adoring sister Carmelina and best friend and brother-in-law Tommaso (with the angels), Niece Daniela and husband Robert with their loving children Ava and Stella that he adored, Niece Elide and husband Jim, with their loving children Zachary and Megan that he was blessed to have in his life. Domenico will be held dear in the hearts of all his loving friends and family in Italy and France as well. He had such a love for France and Italy and loved speaking French.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Canadian Cancer Society of Canada or The Heart and Stroke Foundation.
